The summer of 2020, we officially expanded Luna’s home decor line to include Peruvian sunburst mirrors! Available in a variety of sizes, the mirrors are hand-carved and exquisitely crafted with a sleek bronze finish that will add a chic touch to any home. As with all Luna products, we’ve collaborated closely with local artisans to create the one-of-a-kind pieces. Now, we’re excited to give you a behind-the-scenes look into the creation process!

In the below video, you’ll see our talented Peruvian artist Yudmer M. outline the mirror’s initial shape before cutting the pieces along the drawn lines. This is followed by the assembly process of putting the pieces together, carving the wood and gluing the pieces together. As you watch the video, you’ll see that the bulk of the time is spent on the frame. To manufacture these mirrors, our artisans use a combination of chalk and glue to cover the wood strands, before sanding everything to get rid of any chips and ultimately sanding once more to ensure a smooth texture. To protect from moisture and impurities, the frame is finally lacquered and mopped.

The hand-carving technique used here is a centuries-old one that was once used to create religious sculptures. At Luna, we’re proud to work with artists who have retained traditional indigenous practices, and who utilize sustainable materials to produce their wares. We deeply believe in the importance of empowering these local artists to change their communities for the better, creating a positive chain reaction that grows to impact others.

You can feel free to DM us directly if you’d like to learn more about the full creative process. Otherwise, keep watching below to see the final result!

All our mirrors are available to shop in the home decor section of our website, along with other authentic Peruvian pieces like rugs and cushion covers.
